Lao Chen Carrot Cake & Popiah is a heritage stall at Tiong Bahru Market that has been turning out comforting plates of chai tow kway and handmade popiah for decades. Run by a resilient second-generation hawker who took over after her husband's passing in 1998, the stall is a living story of perseverance and family tradition. The fried carrot cake—both white and black versions—sells from just $3.50 to $4.50, with a wok-hei richness that keeps regulars coming back before the 2 pm closing time. Their popiah is equally popular, rolled fresh with generous fillings of turnip, lettuce, crunchy bits and sweet sauce. Arrive early; the queue builds quickly and items sell out by midday.

Lousy. Worst carrot cake I ever ate. Not enough egg. Black sauce is low quality. Carrot cake mushy. Super oily and inedible. After 3 mouthful feel like vomit. Please stay away. Waste money.
